Recordation and Recording - Some Explanations

Gotlands were introduced to the United States when Laproscopic AI became possible. Semen was imported from the UK and a "breeding up program" began.  Nine foundation breeds were identified for this purpose (Shetland Sheep, Icelandic Sheep, Finnsheep, Wensleydale , Lincoln, Cotswold, English Leicester, Border Leicester, and Bluefaced Leicesters). LAI rams are reviewed by an advisory committee pf the American Gotland Sheep Society (AGSS) and are accepted into the registry only if they meet AGSS breed standards.

Our flock consists of 6 females.  Five are "registered" (meaning that they are at least 75% Gotland) and one are "recorded" (at least 50% Gotland).  The ram is also registered (87.5 % Gotland).

To be recorded, ewes must be at least 50% Gotland and come from one of the nine foundation breeds.  Rams must be at least 75% Gotland to be recorded.

To registered, ewes must be at least 75% Gotland.  Rams must be at least 87% Gotland.

In recognition of our reliance on imported rams (right now there is no access to Gotland semen in Canada), the American Gotland Sheep Society will allow Canadian breeders to record ewes that are at least 43% Gotland for a specific period of time.  This means that breeders using a registered ram can record the female offspring on the first breeding.
